Personal Reflection 10

Despite having prayed and having the permission of God, of course my mind is still too sterile to produce any sufficiently original thoughts of myself. The reason being not just God is blocking my mind, but indeed the time for original thought is long gone. I am not to be a producer of original thought, but a commentator or compiler of the works of old. For the days are last and so no merit can be had from having original thought. Though it matters not when the days are, I believe there is never any real merit from original thought.

For nothing is truly original, everything is pre-existent in essence, though not in existence. The only Being which is pre-existent in both essence and existence is God, as He is utterly simple, where His essence is identical to His existence. For now I can still run away writing these ideas without being arrested for plagiarism. However, I know that the time will come when I must cite my sources, as the idea of divine simplicity is not my idea, I am simply repeating what I have read and heard from many sources.

There can be original expression, but it is only original to the extent which it comes from a particular subject within a finite context of space and time. Otherwise, in the hidden immaterial realm of reality, essence is eternal. One cannot create essence, not even God can. Because essence, is contained within God, though the particular essences are not necessarily God themselves, that would lead to pantheism. For God knows all things, then He knows all things experientially, then we reach the conclusion that in God we can find all things.

Yet still God is not the sum or even union of those things. I was wrong in the past, heretical even, to say that God is the sum or union of all things which are not God. Because the infinity of God is more than just being quantitatively infinite, rather He is qualitatively infinite. So, while there are infinitely many particular essences, these essences combined are still by nature finite, as their essence is still finite. Yet, God is somehow beyond that, and for that reason there is the saying that without everything, God would remain God.

God's essence is existence, pure existence, which makes Him absolutely perfect and good. However, we do not know what existence is. Knowledge of existence, true existence, would perhaps render us dead, as the saying "See God and die" suggests. At the same time, knowledge of existence as it is means knowledge of God as He is existence. Not even I can crack the code of what existence is. I may say that to exist is to be phenomenal, but is this truly the case?

Regardless, we know that existence is relative. For God, everything exists, perhaps because He is everything. Yet, this statement must be treated with severe caution. The statement that God is everything, or is the union of everything, may be interpreted to say that everything is God, which is false because that leads to pantheism. Pantheism suggests that all things are God, and that we too are somehow God. This cannot be further than the case. Creatures cannot be the same as their Creator.

A single human being is not God, but by what virtue? The only reason I can think of is by the virtue of his experiences. If a human being has the experiences of God, then that is no human being, that is simply God. Or it is a human puppet being controlled by God, only the appearance of humanity remains, but there is no distinct human soul, only the Divine Being which exists in that body. This was probably some sort of Christological heresy.

Then there's the idea that God is impassible. He cannot and does not experience emotions like we do. For He lacks nothing and is absolutely perfect. This follows from the idea that God is infinite, He is therefore self-sufficient. Then He does not need our worship, we need to worship Him. The act of worshipping God must be commanded of us not because it benefits God in any way, but because it benefits us in every way.

We might as well question all of creation, God does not need creation, but we need creation. We need to be to be happy. We are created for our sole benefit. However, a lead that one has not explored that much is why we need to be created. There is little material on this, so I presume this is an original thought, that we were from God's own consciousness. Thus we are God making the decision to become human souls. Our goodness is then what constitutes God's happiness and bliss, thus creating a circular loop of self-sustainment.

However, this is possibly heresy so I leave it as a mere idea and I hold no faith in it, for my sole faith is in God through the Catholic Church. With that, the precursor to our experience would simply be a mystery of the faith. Though in my opinion the circular theory does not really go against any core doctrine of the Faith, God remains impassible, He remains infinite, He remains self-sufficient. The idea that we are part of His bliss does not make Him any less self-sufficient, as He is by nature, "finished". He has "all", that is all of the past, present, and future. We do not become identical to God, rather maintain our distinct essence from God. That is how I see things. This sums up my thoughts and writing for now.
