On the Reading of Books
When reading a non-fiction book, easy or difficult, the following procedure may be employed, that is a 2 step procedure divided into interpretation and response. Interpretation involves paraphrasing the source material to demonstrate that we possess understanding of the material. If it is impossible to paraphrase, which indicates a lack of understanding or a higher understanding, then the material may be copied as it is.
In the case that interpretation requires copying of the source material, then it becomes a 3 step procedure to understand the book. The first step is copying, the second step is the actual interpretation. Interpretation shall be done according to the known methods of comprehension and understanding. Interpretation elaborates and explains the material according to our understanding, or exposes that which is impossible to understand. Finally, the response is a response to the material, be it evaluation, application, or exploration.
